Most of the references don't bother me too much.
The only things that have ever really bugged me were the AWFUL cutscenes in Factions (watch the ending cutscene to Raisu Palace some time).
Although some of the inscription names are pretty silly with their song references ("Don't Fear the Reaper", "I Can See Clearly Now", "Sleep Now in the Fire" etc).

I love the references. One of my favorite things about Guild Wars. Drakes on a plain is priceless. Although the references shouldn't be forced in like some are. "Can't Touch This!" Yeah, instead of making a useful skill, let's make a skill nobody will ever use so that we can make reference to a rap song -_-

I've no problem with them. ANet's been quite good about not going overboard with them.
I have, however, wondered who "Jake King" is (the merchant at Ring of Fire is 'Gnik Ekaj' = Jake King backwards).

Love em! I Love em!
The fact that the male rit does the Napolean Dance, or the Male Derv does the Weapon of choice dance is awesome.
i love the fact that taking Zhed on the Poghan Passage mission evokes a star wars blurb.
The monty python references are awesome...
I find them clever...anyone who cannot appreciate "cant' touch this" never wore parachute pants.
If I could get my ele to chant "ice ice baby every time i cast a water based spell, I would be in heaven.
Now, let's get koss to yell "Busta Move" when its time to Kite adn have the next special potions/ elixers be called "Funky Cold Medina" and "Gin and Juice"
I'm 33....this is all great fun for me as it is stuff I grew up with...sorry if it ruins it for everyone else.

I like them. They aren't as prevalent as the Wiki would have you believe. It seems most people there think EVERYTHING is a reference to something else. They get quite over the top with it.

I'll again go with the criteria of "if it fits." Drakes on the plain is just funny, as is say "it's just a flesh wound".... but "can't touch this".... "make your time"... "leather bound books"... even "skillz" is going a bit far. They don't fit the GW world at all, thus they aren't a pun with double-meaning, and not particularly clever. Contrast with "drakes" which is funny precisely because they changed so much to make it fit GW, that it's gone beyond mere reference to become parody.

I really so no problem with it at all. I understand it is tough making up names for characters as I have trouble deciding for my very own characters. To make Guold Wars they need tons of names and so what if they use real life references I think it adds a bit of fun, there really is no problem with it unless it put the person/thing down and/or makes it look bad.

I like the references throughout GW, they're like easter eggs and I like finding them. Some of them I even thought of without realizing Anet put it in on purpose (I will Survive for instance, I didn't know Anet meant to reference that song). Probably one of my favorite references is the skill Ride The Lightning because I like Metallica. I would still like to see Anet put in an elite Necromancer skill in GW:EN called Master of Puppets (I already know GW:EN is well into development and all that, I guess I'm more hoping they already put it in) or a Warrior shout called "Finish Him!". Also, whenever my ele casts fireball, I'll sometimes say "Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!".

My opinion is this: The references are a fun little addition and are generally quite humorous. And complaining about such trifles is silly.

Heh, whether or not they originally made the fortress as a reference to Star Wars or Islam, they certainly threw a ton of Star Wars references in the mission, so you can't deny that "moon fortress" probably sparked "Death Star" in the devs' heads.

Personally I don't mind them at all...after all it can be a daunting task naming everything in the world....so maybe sometimes they just go with something that they know. Like Shadis...I think sometimes people go overboard with the trivia.
Heck...I wonder how many of you recognize the squirrel calls in the ambient noise in Plains of Jarin.

Yes, exactly - if a phrase that happens to be a pop culture reference makes sense within the cotext of the game, then great - if however, it feels a bit forced and put in there for the sake of it, then not. For instance, I took 'Victory is mine!' to be reference to Stewie's catchphrase in Family Guy, but it also makes perfect sense to say that in during a battle. The only one I really don't like is the 'Skillz' title track as it doesn't fit in with a fantasy world at all.

The references to RL are great, however the additions to the KoaBD track are horrible. Its almost like you don't ever want to hit twenty maxed titles so you wont have to wear the horrible titles.

I play Morrowind if I want to be immersed in a wonderfully rich and detailed fantasy world. And you know what? Even that game has tons of easter eggs, many of which I stopped and had a chuckle at. Everyone who said "it's to remind you that you're playing a game" is absolutely right; playing pretend is fun, but you've crossed the line when you adopt a new name and start cosplaying.
So laugh it up. Guild Wars isn't even a particularly immersive game to begin with because it isn't so much focused on character skill as it is player skill. No amount of Roleplaying in the international districts will change the fact that you ARE pulling the strings. (which isn't to say the actual gameworld of Guild Wars isn't compelling, because it is; the Prophecies storyline is top notch)
Besides all that, this is a game played by millions of people. Are you honestly telling me that you just pretend like you were the only person ever to kill Shiro? That's the realm of fan-fiction.
